When Dawn contacted me last month to come to her house and photograph her family, I was more than thrilled. It was my chance to get back to my roots of photographing life as it happens. I had so much fun photographing these awesome kids. They were so full of life and you can see that in these photographs. I hope that these help the U family remember this day for a very long time!

These sisters are just beautiful. They clearly love each other. A sister is such an awesome gift to be given.

Brother Jake had to tickle them to make them laugh. Little brothers :)

Jake is all boy. He and I hung out in his car themed room. He's such a handsome little guy!

Big sister Gracie is going to break some hearts someday. Isn't she stunning?

And Riley, those freckles and blonde hair? She'll be sure to turn heads.

Jake has already won my heart, only the first of many I'm sure!

We call this "blue steel". LOL!

I had such a great time with this beautiful family yesterday. It felt good to photograph emotion. It was a great way to start off my day. I even managed to score some Girl Scout cookies from the little ladies! YUM!

Last time I saw sweet Ryan he was just an itty bitty. He had a full head of hair then and he sure didn't disappoint this time either! He was all smiles and so darn adorable!

What I've been up! {Minnesota Child and Family Photographer}

A lot of photographers complain that January and February are slow months for them. And, for the most part, they truly are. But holy cow, I have been booked solid all of January and through February! It's been amazing and I feel truly lucky for these amazing clients. Being that I've been booked solid with sessions, family birthdays, our new homeschool adventure and oh so much more, I've been slacking big time on the previews. So today is the day.

First up, Gavin. He turned 18 months old and sadly our year together has come to an end. These sessions are always bittersweet. It makes me happy to watch them grow into little people, but it's hard to say goodbye. He's turned into such a handsome little fella.

Whitney turns 1 {Forest Lake Minnesota Child Photographer}

What a fantastic session this turned out to be. The whole family was present, the kids were looking adorable and we had cause to celebrate: Whitney just turned 1! We even ventured outdoors for some pictures and boy, am I glad we did. The sun was gorgeous in the early evening sky, making this family look even more amazing than they are!

This dress was her mom's at her age. I adore it. I just love vintage yumminess.

I normally don't shoot full extended families, but when my neighbor April asked if I would do a session while her family was in town for Christmas, I could hardly turn it down, especially since they are such a loving family. It turned out to be an incredibly beautiful December day here in MN so we ventured outdoors. The sun was shining and it was the perfect morning for a session.

The weather couldn't have been the complete opposite today from yesterday. No sun, lots of wind and cool temps. But, that didn't stop adorable little Archer from being irresistibly cute! Archer belongs to an old high school friend who I haven't seen in many years, it was great catching up for a bit and meeting her sweet little guy. Isn't he just adorable?

This morning I met up with friend and fellow photographer Laura for a family photoshoot swap! It was a chilly morning, but the sun was stunning and created the most delicious light. Everything seemed golden and it just goes to prove you don't need to shoot at dusk to get amazing colors.

Meet the L family. I've been shooting these guys for a long time and I so enjoy their beautifulness!

Noah, what a handsome fella.

I thought for sure this image screamed black and white but when I processed it, I was very torn. Either way, it's a serene and timeless shot.

Yeah, yeah, I went a little sunflare crazy here and while it's a bit overexposed, I just love the silliness of this shot. It almost seems like nobody else is there to watch sweet Owen and he's just in his own little goofy world.

And sweet Avery. She was not having it today, she wanted nothing to do with me, but that's ok, I snuck in a few shots of her!

I just love this perfectly imperfect shot. You see, I get it! I totally get it. This is most likely what my family shots looked like. Laura calls it organized chaos, not so sure about that but it's what a real family of 5 looks like, that's for sure!

I am in love! My first and only nephew is the sweetest and most adorable little guy in town. He's so kissable and snuggable and I simply can't get enough.

Last year I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful family from Oregon, we spent the morning hanging out, sledding and sipping hot cocoa. I was so thrilled when they contacted me again this year for their annual family pictures. And the best part? They added a little guy to the mix and I got to meet him. He sure was a sweetie, so mild mannered, he fits in perfect with his family.

Zira is getting so big, she's in kindergarten now and really loves it!

I've been meaning to get out this fall and get some shots of my own kids. I've been out so many times with all the other lovely families I photograph, but haven't made it a point to snap some of my own kiddos in this beautiful fall weather. I've also been meaning to get the girls dresses made and I literally finished them about 1 hour before we went out. It was spur of the moment and I couldn't be happier with the results!

I met up with an incredibly gorgeous family last night. It was a perfect night (albeit windy), but the skies were clear, the sun was golden and the trees were beautiful. I couldn't have asked for more.

I've been shooting sweet little AJ since he was 3 months old and alas our time together has come to an end. It's always so much fun watching these kiddos grow and change, but also very sad when it's time to say goodbye. Lucky for me, there will be a sweet little lady added to the family come February, so I will get to start anew with this awesome family!

Not every shot I take is technically perfect, of course I aim to do it, but this shot makes me swoon. Usually a child facing full sun = not awesome shot, but I love this shot, his face is priceless and I couldn't love it more.

Yesterday I met up with some friends of ours. We met at the awesome Tamarack Nature Center in WBL for some wonderful fall pictures. Believe it or not, these guys have never had professional pictures taken, EVER! I was so happy to be able to do this for them. Our kids are great friends. My Bianca and their Avery have been little besties since the day they met last year and maybe some day My Annika and their Wyatt will make a great couple (he he). But for now, we are just enjoying having another family like ours to have playdates with (and wine dates).

Meet sweet Avery. She's only a few days younger than Bianca and they are so much alike. Watch out world, these girls will be taking it by storm.

And Wyatt, he kept telling me this was the worst day ever, but he did awesome!

I just love this shot of Amanda and Kellen, it's so sweet and timeless. Just beautiful.

And Kellen, I just love this kid. He's so sweet with a bit of a wild streak, and this kid can throw a ball like nobody's business!

Last time I hung out with Mr. Henry, he was just an itty bitty baby. I have to admit, I feel mighty proud with this family as they had a terrible first experience with Henry's original newborn photos, which led them to me. He was the most perfect newborn, quiet and sleepy and as a 6 month old, he was happy and smiley. A photographer couldn't ask for a better baby!

We met up last weekend at Tamarack Nature Center in WBL, one of my most favorite locations. It's peaceful, beautiful and provides so many different backdrops for outdoor sessions.

Henry isn't quite sitting yet so this log was the perfect prop for this guy.

Mom, Shauna, is so beautiful and you can tell she just loves her baby boy.

Tristan is 9 months and I can't even believe he's so close to turning 1. It's amazing how quickly time flies. And, I thought he was a beautiful little boy when he was a newborn, but man does this boy get cuter and cuter. Tristan, mom and dad and I headed out to Tamarack Nature Center in our old stomping grounds, it's such a beautiful location and was the perfect backdrop for this lovely overcast day.

Days like yesterday are bittersweet, I get to see a sweet little lady at her one year milestone, but that means that our year together has come to an official end. Laura was no exception. She has been a sweet doll since day 1 and I just adore every session I have with her. This was by far one of my favorites, she is such a beautiful little lady!

Yesterday I met up with a super family in Minnetonka. I was asked to photograph the 4 grandchildren. What a lovely idea for a lovely family. Only catch? They were all 4 and under! I'm always up for a good adventure so off I went. They were fun, all 4 of them. They are lucky to have each other!

Last Friday I headed down to Roseville to the Como Park Lakeside Pavillion. It was the first time I have done a shoot there and I have to say, I totally loved it. What's even better? Having an incredibly beautiful family to photograph. Meet the B family.

Tonight I crossed our little street and met up with a family I've known for years. It's always fun to photograph friends, especially one's with kiddos as cute as these!

Miss Goergia, I met this little lady when she was just 10 months old, now she's starting Kindergarten. Time surely flies! Such a little beauty, and those freckles are to die for!

And little Miss Charley, she's a mere 10 months old and is already walking! Sounds like trouble but luckily she's sweet as can be!

And talk about gorgeous girls. Seriously, this might be one of my all time favorite shots to date. Just stunning. You can only hope they have this relationship always...

And funny little Matt, he's 2 1/2 and boy does he remind me of my little Bennett. Always on the go, goofy and oh so animated!

Such a lovely and down to earth family, we are lucky to have them as neighbors.

Yesterday was the day I took my beautiful sister's belly pictures. She's 29 weeks preggo with my first nephew (YAY, finally an auntie!) and she's growing a good one in there! I can't wait until October to meet the little guy, I'm sure he'll be absolutely perfect in every way.

About 1 year ago, when Wyatt was only an itty bitty 3 months old, I began photographing him. Now here he is, 20 months old and he's changed so much. He's been such a joy to follow as he's grown and it's always bittersweet when it comes to an end. I can only hope I get to see this lovely family again someday :)

ISO Challenge!

This week over at ISO, the challenges are "flare" and "feet", 2 of my most favorite things. I've been dinkin' around all week and finally "took the challenge" this evening. The sun was right, the feet were dirty and it was an all around success!

We've spent the week at the cabin and baths are here and there, and you can definitely tell when looking at their little tootsies. The kids were on the dock fishing so I snapped some shots of their dirty piggies. There is just something about dirty toes that get me every time!

My entry for flare was tough since I am known for catching some awesome flare. I just adore it and am slightly addicted. I got a lot of really dramatic shots as the sun was setting but this one of Bianca was my favorite. It just may be applied to canvas for her room :)

I feel like it was just yesterday that sweet little Charlie was born and all of a sudden he is 3 months old! This little guy is the most perfect baby there ever was. He's always happy, never cries and is just a darling little boy. He's a doll to have around, luckily he belongs to my longtime friend Molly and I get to see him often. I just love him like he's my own :)

Sweet little Ryan was far from this old nursery rhyme, he was sweet and quiet and curious. In fact, that old nursery rhyme should be erased from the history books because any mama of a little boy knows just how sweet and loving he truly is :)

My "baby" turned 6 last week. That number baffles me because it really doesn't seem all that long ago that she was chubby, almost bald and oh so new. Now she is a walking, talking, skinny legged, freckled face girl with a full head of red hair.

She's funny, smart and loving and I'm a very proud mama. She's off to first grade in just a few short weeks and it leaves me wondering where the heck the time went? Why does it have to go so fast? It's a question parents have been asking for thousands of years yet it continues to happen and it truly is bittersweet.

So enough babbling and here's a little sneak peak of our session.

Of course, I had to snap some pics of the other two as well.

We are on an Annie kick here in the Sauer household and while Mrs. Hannigan may despise little girls, I sure do love all things girly. Today I met up with Cala and her beautiful family for a Mamarazzi's Rock Workshop. It was so fun spending the day with her, showing her the ropes and shooting her ADORABLE kiddos. With the Mamarazzi's Rock Workshop, I shoot the family like I would during a normal session so the "Mamarazzi" can see how I work and then she can have some images as well to hang on her walls. So here is a nice little sneak peek from the day. Thanks for having me Cala, it was such a blast!

Newness {Minnesota Newborn Photographer}

Today I got the chance to meet up with a lovely new family who just welcomed their sweet Baby Emmett into their family just earlier this week! He also happens to be the grandson of my kiddo's preschool teacher so it was great to go out there and see where she spends her free time. I brought the girls with and they had a blast swimming in the lake, jumping on the trampoline and swinging from the flying bar! It was a nice afternoon. Oh, and did I mention that Emmett was the most perfect newborn I've ever photographed? He slept the whole time, didn't make a peep and is oh so yummy! Just check him out!

I am in shock mode lately with all these babies I started shooting a year ago are getting so big and grown up now. Gavin is no exception, he turned one a few weeks ago and today we celebrated with pictures! He's cute as ever and full of smiles! He made my job easy.

Last weekend was the last time I would photograph little Miss Avery in her first year of life. My baby's first year client's are always bittersweet. I get to spend the year watching them grow and then all of a sudden we are done! No fair! Avery has been a dream to photograph, she's absolutely gorgeous and is as good as can be! This time was no exception. And mom, Laura, always has the best outfits and ideas! It always makes for a fun time!

Last night was the most perfect night for pictures and I got to meet up with Miss Zoe and her beautiful family. This is my 3rd year shooting Zoe and I seriously enjoy it more and more each time. Zoe is spunky, energetic, goofy and oh so beautiful. She's got the most gorgeous brown eyes that just shine in pictures. I adore her! Without further adieu.

Finding the light {Minneapolis MN Lifestyle Photographer}

There is just something about the summer sun that leaves me breathless. In the winter I crave it, I dream about it. In the summer I see it and I am just in awe. You know, in the evening when you are sitting on the deck enjoying a cold one and you look down at your child and you see that amazing halo of light around their frizzy summer hair, and their skin is beautiful and warm and there is a slight haze in the air. Ok, so maybe I sound a little crazy there but that's what I see and I feel fortunate that I have the eye to see it.

Shooting in full sun is a scary thought for many, many people. It was for me, that is for sure. Then I learned to embrace it and I almost always prefer to shoot when the sun is shining. While I love having my studio with fabulous natural light, it always leaves me wanting more in the cold winter months. So when summer rolls around, I am pure heaven.

The key to shooting in full sun is simple and can be done in 3 steps: timing, manual mode and positioning of the subject (of course a little bravery should be expected too).

Timing is everything. You really can't get that yummy warm light in the middle of the day. The sun is too high and will just cause your subject to squint and really illuminate their skin. Shooting early morning or evening is best when the sun is low in the sky. Evening is my favorite shooting time, you get beautiful shots like this:

In the evening you can get awesome sun flare too (you can't use a hood when trying to achieve this, it blocks the flare).

Positioning is probably more important than timing. In full sun you need to be very aware about placing your subject properly. I generally don't have my subjects facing the sun, even in the evening it can be pretty bright and harsh and I really don't prefer that. I want a warm and soft shot.

You will need to place the subject with his/her back toward the sun, turned just slightly to the side so the sun can illuminate the face a bit.

I also love to go for more silhoutted shots too. This one I changed my exposure a bit and the subject became a bit darker and the colors became more rich.

This one I knew I wanted only the sillouttes so I once again adjusted my exposure so that their bodies were completely dark. This creates a very dramatic shot with really vivid background colors. I love it!

Finally, the most important thing you can do for yourself to learn how to shoot in the sun, is to turn your camera to manual and learn, learn, learn. The only way you can properly expose in full sun is to get your exposure right. You need to have full control over all your settings. I always set my ISO at 100 and my aperture around 2.0 then I play with my shutterspeed. I like to overexpose just slightly but that is my preference. You will have to play around and see what you like and how your camera reacts to the light.

And lastly, don't be afraid of the haze! It creates an image that will bring you straight back to that hot summer day for all eternity. This shot was taken last summer and looking at it I still remember my kids in that very moment on that very day. I remember how I felt when I got this shot and how happy I was to have created that moment in time. It reminds me of happy times when all my kids are getting along. A mother's dream!

Summer Sun Mini-Sessions Announcement {Minnesota Child and Family Photographer}

Now that summer is in full gear, I am loving the sun once again and like last year, I have a slight addiction to it. And due to my obsession, I would like to announce my Summer Sun Mini-Sessions! You see, I can't bottle the sun and keep it in my pantry to use whenever my little heart desires, so I need to utilize it while I can! And I want you to be a part of it! Mini-sessions are perfect for those who aren't in the market for a full blown session and would like just a few pictures for their walls. You can use these for holiday cards too, it's never to early to think of those!

I will be holding mini-sessions on just one date this summer and can only accommodate 5 sessions this year. Each mini-session will last a maximum of 30 minutes which will produce 10-12 images in a gallery for your viewing pleasure. A maximum of 4 people will be allowed in each mini-session. I will have a total of 5 spaces available so you will need to act quickly. A signed contract and the entire fee is due upon booking to secure your session time.

Ok, so 18 months isn't all grown up, but it seems like it when you've been shooting a little guy for a year! Jake's Baby's First Year is up, but lucky me I get to start all over with baby #2! Congrats to Jessi and Jeff on their upcoming arrival!

Yesterday we ventured out to St. Anthony Main, it was a gorgeous day and the place was hopping. We had a good time wandering and shooting! Jake was a dream, so smiley and happy!

Mamarazzi {Minnesota Lifestyle Photographer}

I don't share a lot of my personal life here on my blog, I know I occasionally share pictures of the kiddos that I especially love, but not our everyday lives. I am participating in Becky Higgins' Project Life due to the sheer amount of pictures I take of our day to day lives. I love the idea of a mamarazzi and totally consider myself one, it just so happens I'm fortunate enough to be able to take quality pictures that document the details in my family's life.

And because I feel fortunate to be able to do this, I'd love to share my ideas, tips and tricks on how you can better document the details of your life. Since I don't share many of the mundane details of our life here, I thought I'd give you a better picture of how I shoot my own family. Sure, I love doing the portraits for the milestones like birthdays, Christmas and other holidays, but what I truly love looking back on are the daily happenings.

This is my month of February:

I can clearly remember each and every shot I took from Bennett's naked booty in front of his favorite place ever (the fireplace) to Bianca being a grump at the sock hop. These pictures are what make up my life here at home.

These 2 are from a movie night we had about a month ago. The kids were freshly bathed and all camped out on the carpet watching Tangled. It was a nice sunny night and I love that I can remember that.

My family goes strawberry picking each June, these shots are from last year but I remember the day plain as day. It started out windy and chilly and within minutes the sun was shining and the kids were devouring more strawberries than we could pick!

I try to do the same for families I shoot as well. It was a cold wintery day last December when I shot the D family. We spent time in front of the fire reading books, checking out the kids' rooms, sledding and sipping hot chocolate. What a great way to spend a session and getting to know another family.

And the W family, we also spent time checking out Georgia's room, jumping on the bed and swinging high. It was a lot of fun.

Please note, the date for the Your Camera and How To Use It workshop has not been determined yet and will depend on participants. This will most likely happen in August or September though for planning purposes. Dates for all the other mentoring sessions and workshops will be determined when you register since they will all be one on one and will be dependent upon both mine and your availability.

Lastly, all one on one in person mentoring sessions (including the Mamarazzi Workshop) will only be available to local participants and a travel fee will be added if travel is beyond 50 miles of Lino Lakes.

Like I said in the last post, I was a lucky lady in the studio on Saturday. This little guy followed my darling little one year old and he was such a dream. This is Henry and he is 3 weeks old. I didn't hear a peep out of him the entire time. He slept half the session and was awake for the other half. I got a good combo of sleepy baby boy and wide eyed baby boy. He made my job too easy! He even gave me several good smiles!

Workin' it {St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota Lifestyle Photographer}

I've been asked by several people if I would host a workshop again and my first response was "no way". Of course I've been sitting on the idea now for a few weeks and I like the idea of it more and more. The only real reason I would have to say no is because my life is so busy as it is and it won't be slowing down anytime soon.

I already formatted one workshop and of course that would be the easy way to go since it's already all written up, however I've been tossing around ideas of workshops that are a bit more centered around how I shoot, how I document and how I edit. Here are some of my ideas:

One on One Mentoring: this could be done via phone, internet chat or in person, depending on your preference and location. Of course the phone and internet mentoring would be cheaper than the in person mentoring, but the in person mentoring would be much more beneficial in my opinion. The mentoring session would be completely individualized based on your needs as a photographer.

Your Camera and How to Use it: this would be strictly a workshop for teaching you how to use your camera correctly and effectively.

Mamarazzi Workshop: this would be solely for those mama's and papa's who want to learn the craft of lifestyle photography to take better photos of their families. There should already be a base knowledge of how to work your camera in a manual setting so that we didn't have to cover that.

Now I ask you, what type of workshop would you want me to host? I am looking for ideas so that I can formulate a plan of action. Feel free to email me at msauerphotography@gmail.com with ideas and interest in any of these!
